Hi Emma Really enjoying the double tonguing challenge and the "proper" music but you certainly need stamina for the Sammartini! And how can you breathe without losing the pace?

Hi Jill, yes, sorry! You do need stamina for the Sammartini... That hadn’t been the first ‘proper’ piece I had intended to move onto, but after thinking about it and its repeated notes, I thought it would be a fun one to work on over the Easter weekend. The initial piece I had thought to move onto will be in the next video, which will be easier to get to grips with!

Regarding breathing and not losing pace, the Sammartini has RESTS where you want to breathe which is a help. And as you can hear from the video, I play it all very LIGHTLY so the quavers and crotchets (eighth and quarter notes) are quite short, so this gives you time to breathe. REMEMBER to take time off the note BEFORE a breath so the next beat/note is in time.

Also, sometimes it can feel like the breathing is tricky and slows you down when playing fast movements but in actual fact, it could be that your tongue is getting tired. Try practising the semiquaver passages (16th notes) like we did in the first three videos, and in the Exercises, Part 1, where we didn’t play all the semiquavers to start with, but instead built up to that. For example, looking at the first three bars of the Sammartini, you could practise each of those bars as four semiquavers and a crotchet, in order to be able to keep the speed up. Then switch that around to practise those bars as a crotchet followed by four semiquavers. Then play eight semiquavers in bar 1, followed by two crotchets in bar 2 and eight semiquavers in bar 3, and so on.
