Hi Emma,

Thank you - Your tutorials are so much more than a lesson in double tonguing! It feels like therapy - encouraging us to tackle what we all try to avoid! Since all our lives have become more constricted, I haven't always felt like playing. Everything feels out of kilter and unsettling and I need a focus to work towards and this is exactly what you are giving us all. So a very big thank you and I look forward to the next instalment. Hearing your reassuring voice feels like a bedtime story...safe and comforting! xx

I completely agree Sarah. I have spent the last hour doing the ironing to the accompaniment of double tonguing!

Ha ha Jane! That's perfect! That's exactly the way to do it. I hope you were saying your syllables while you were ironing? You can say them when you're doing lots of other things, like cleaning, getting dressed, having a bath etc etc.
Stay well X

Thanks for your kind words Sarah. That's exactly what I wanted this to be: a focus in these unsettling times. But also something challenging to try, and fun. One student of mine has emailed to say she doesn't know what the rest of her family are thinking about the 'funny noises' coming from her bedroom.....! It's great she, and all of you, are giving it a go. Exactly as you say - attempting something that always tends to be avoided.
I hope you and all your family are well, Sarah.
Happy practising!
X Emma

Hi Emma, I feel that after many past attempts to learn double tonguing, I may be finally able to do it from your instruction here. Thank you. Two questions:1) Since I have a very slow tongue, could I start the exercise at a slower tempo and build up? Would that work?; and 2) I play the soprano recorder exclusively right now, and I'm wondering if the same double tonguing technique applies to this voice. Again, thanks so much for your generous spirit. Abbe 🦋

That's GREAT NEWS Abbe! I'm so glad you feel my videos are helping you with this challenge. With regard to your questions:

1) I mention in the third video that you can practise these exercises a LITTLE slower, if you feel you need to, but not too much slower, otherwise you're in danger of using single tonguing instead of double tonguing. The speed needs to be too fast for you to single tongue. You'll have to work out what's best for you, bearing this in mind.

2) Yes, the same double tonguing applies to the soprano recorder.

Good luck! Any other questions, get in touch! X

Dear emma, when I download the exercises you disappear, so I can't follow the lesson. Also the button takes me to your shop page which only has exercises one and 2. Any suggestions? I am on an android tablet. Maybe I should try on my iPhone?. Ruth

Hi Ruth, I’m not sure what’s going on there... The button takes you to the Shop page where you have to pay £2 to download the exercises. Perhaps download them first, before you start the video?? Exercises, Parts 1, 2 and 3 are up there. In hindsight, I see I might have made it a little confusing, in that videos 1 and 2 have no exercises, then videos 3-5 have Exercises, parts 1-3 respectively.
The next video will have no exercises!! I hope that helps X
